About

537601_4749986711133_240446769_n Hi, I’m Kelsie. I’m 23 and live in Los Angeles. By day I work in the entertainment industry and by night I write the things that eventually make their way up here. Sometimes I make videos in my bathroom. Sometimes I put on a blue wig and rap. I was once described as the whiskey sour of personalities because I’m both sassy and sweet. I think that’s accurate.

You can email me at thekelsiemonster@gmail.com

I also sing choirs of Hallelujahs and sob with complete ecstasy when I get new followers on Twitter:  @kelsieMONSTER

7 Random Facts About Me

  1. I only crave coffee within the first 5-10 minutes of waking up. This is also the only window of time in which I can drink it and still adhere to a normal peeing/bowel movement schedule.
  2. I spent a summer during my junior year of college living in Mumbai, India working for a children’s television show. You can read a bit more about that here. Again this involved irregular bowel movements.
  3. I have ADHD and mixed anxiety/depression. It tends to influence my writing a lot – so far just indirectly but I’m trying to be more open about it in an attempt to understand and accept it about myself. I’m very open on a personal, one-on-one level so if you have questions or stories to share about the modern American mental health system, I can definitely relate.  Don’t be afraid to reach out.533146_3376772061625_861066279_n
  4. I moved to LA only 10 days after graduatingfrom undergrad with nothing but 3 suitcases, a job offer and about two thousand dollars to my name.Sometimes what you think will be the scariest thing for you turns out to be the best. Oh, and I spent that $2,000 almost instantly.
  5. Swimming is one of the best things you can do for yourself. I love it. I did it competitively, I do it for exercise. I used to teach it. Learn to swim if you can’t! I’ll help!
  6. I keep Post-Its everywhere: on my desk at work, in my car, in my bathroom, in my purse, on my nightstand. You never know when you’re going to have a brilliant thought or need to remind yourself to return your library books. When I have an intern (or assistant) one day, he or she will be my human post it.
  7. It took going on a date with a new guy every night of the week to realize that I’m doing absolutely fine on my own. Sometimes you need to take the convoluted, crazy, get accidentally drunk on a weeknight route to learn the simplest lessons. And that’s okay.

About My Name

I started calling myself Kelsie Monster in high school after I saw Avenue Q on Broadway. I don’t think I have a latent desire to be a puppet, but I do think “monster” is somehow perfect for me. The name has stuck at least among my close friends and on the Internet. And then I read this:

“When people shine a little light on their monster, we find out how similar most of our monsters are.  The secrecy, the obfuscation, the fact that these monsters can only be hinted at, gives us the sense that they might be very bad indeed. But when people let their monsters out for a little onstage interview, it turns out that we’ve all done or thought the same things, that this is our lot, our condition.  We don’t end up with a brand on our forehead. Instead, we compare notes.” – Anne Lamott in Bird by Bird

…and then what I was doing here all started to make sense.
